Break the Rules Like ... Lane Moore
Not all Wonder Women wear capes, and not all Unladylike role models need to sit in the C-suite to spark change. Each week, we're introducing y'all to rad women and nonbinary folks we admire. They'll offer up pointers on how we all can #breaktheruleslike they do and help them make the world a better place. If you have a role model to shout out, send hot tips to firstname.lastname@example.org.
1. Introduce yourself: Who are you, where are you from and what do you do?
I’m a stand-up comedian and host of the hit NYC comedy show Tinder Live, which you can see at Littlefield in Brooklyn every month, and I’m also touring the country/world with it, so come see it! It’s the best. I’ve written for The Onion, New Yorker Shouts & Murmurs, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Playboy, GQ. I’m an actor (HBO’s GIRLS, Rooster Teeth), I’m the frontperson in BUST Magazine’s Best Band of 2015, It Was Romance, and we’re currently recording our second album. My first book, How to Be Alone, came out on Nov. 6.
2. When did you first realize this was the right path for you?
I'm pretty sure as soon as a I left the womb.
3. What’s unladylike about you and what you do?
If we're using traditional definitions of ladylike-ness, I'm loud, I'm passionate, I want everything, I'm driven, I have a big appetite, and I don't take any shit.
4. Which of your heroes or role models would you immortalize in bronze?
I heard bronze, and the first thing I thought of was Buffy, but I don't want her to be in bronze because then she'd be dead, and I need her to live.
5. What’s the best advice you’ve received? The worst?
The worst advice I ever received was to sit back and be polite and work really hard, and then I'd be rewarded. I hate that I took it because it's awful advice.
6. What’s bringing you joy right now — or at least keeping you sane?
Doing Tinder Live shows always cheer me up. I just recorded my second It Was Romance album with my band in Nashville, and that was one of those flashbulb "It's really happening" moments for me. Creating, whether it's books or music or comedy, really is my happy place. It's my whole heart.
7. Aside from keys/wallet/phone, what do you never leave home without?
Headphones. Music is my best, oldest friend. Second only to my dog Lights.
8. How can unladies help you and/or your mission?
That sounds so wonderful! Please please buy How to Be Alone: If You Want to and Even If You Don't, anywhere you buy books, and tell your friends about it. I really hope this book will create a huge sea change so people can feel so much less alone and so much more connected and OK. I'd love it if you joined my Patreon; I do a lot of fun stuff over there, and it helps fund my projects. And if you need new music to make your life better, my first It Was Romance album is on iTunes and Spotify and Bandcamp. I also travel the world bringing Tinder Live to colleges and rock and comedy clubs, so if you have the ability to bring me to your town I'd love to come perform it for you. It's such a nonstop laughter joy-filled experience.
