Break the Rules Like ... Porsha Thomas

Not all Wonder Women wear capes, and not all Unladylike role models need to sit in the C-suite to spark change. Each week, we're introducing y'all to rad women and nonbinary folks we admire. They'll offer up pointers on how we all can #breaktheruleslike they do and help them make the world a better place. If you have a role model to shout out, send hot tips to hello@unladylike.co.

1. Introduce yourself: Who are you, where are you from and what do you do?

My name is Porsha Thomas, I’m from Lubbock, Texas, and I do a lot of things (brand strategist, digital marketer, event planner, graphic designer, board member), but ultimately, I’m the founder of a community for women entrepreneurs called #gowrkgrls.

2. When did you first realize this was the right path for you?

I realized I wanted to make money in a creative way before I finished college. I realized that I wanted to be my own boss (and could actually make it happen) almost immediately after landing my inaugural post-college gig. I became passionate about teaching women “how to entrepreneur” after leaping into entrepreneurship and crashing circa 2012. I decided I’d create a community for we “failures” to help each other succeed in 2013.

3. What’s unladylike about you and what you do?

I find that a lot of people are shocked by what’s been called my “brutal honesty.” I don’t know if it’s really all that brutal or not, but I’ll admit there are times when even I ask myself, “was I too honest with them?” I don’t know, y’all. Shit just comes out and I roll with it. 🤷🏾‍♀️

4. Which of your heroes or role models would you immortalize in bronze?

Josephine Baker. And obviously she’d be wearing her banana skirt.

5. What was your feminist aha moment?

Hmm. My mom has always been huge on being independent and “not needing a man for shit.”  I grew up like this! My decision to work with women exclusively was a natural one for me.

6. What’s bringing you joy right now — or at least keeping you sane?

Listening to/reading the news from my astrologer baes, Jessica Lanyadoo and Chani Nicholas, and building out what’s next for #gowrkgrls. We took a mini break while I figured who the fuck I am, basically. Now I’m coming back to life with more clarity.

7. Aside from keys/wallet/phone, what do you never leave home without?

My vape pen.

8. How can unladies help you and/or your mission?
